The Client

Our client, a global hedge fund and private equity investor, was among the largest alternative asset managers worldwide. Known for scaling technology companies rapidly, the firm had a dedicated focus on telecommunications private equity, venture capital in wireless infrastructure, and strategic investments in RF amplifier technology. Today, anyone using mobile networks, cellular communications, or Wi-Fi infrastructure indirectly relies on technology this investor helped bring to market maturity.

The Portfolio Company

The company was created when a major U.S. telecommunications and network equipment manufacturer spun off its power amplifier division into a new independent business. The goal of the corporate carve-out was to provide sharper focus and greater agility in the fast-growing wireless infrastructure and base station market, while still drawing on the parent company’s world-class R&D heritage. Our client acted as the lead investor, providing both capital and governance.

Challenge

After separation from its parent, the new telecom infrastructure spin-out inherited exceptional engineers, valuable intellectual property, and a global customer base of wireless carriers and telecom OEMs. However, it lacked the financial leadership and corporate finance function necessary to support growth, manage M&A, and prepare for an eventual strategic exit. The critical need was to recruit a Chief Financial Officer with deep telecom industry experience, capital markets expertise, and proven ability to scale companies through IPOs and acquisitions.

Solution

Our firm conducted a direct executive search targeting senior finance leaders in the telecommunications and technology sector. This proactive headhunting effort identified and recruited a sitting CFO from another Dallas-based wireless messaging company, convincing him to leave his current post to join the portfolio company. The selected candidate, a certified public accountant, had already guided his former employer through rapid growth and an IPO, and later served as CFO of a major telecom reseller, where he oversaw financial strategy through a successful acquisition. He brought extensive expertise in corporate finance, capital markets, and telecom M&A, making him uniquely qualified to lead the spin-out’s financial transformation.

Results

The newly hired CFO established financial discipline, strengthened reporting, and positioned the company for a successful exit. Within 12 months, he played a pivotal role in the $450M+ sale of the telecom spin-out to a $2B+ revenue communications infrastructure corporation employing approximately 10,000 people worldwide. Following the acquisition, he was promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the acquiring company, where he restored top-line growth, guided restructuring, and ultimately positioned the business for a multibillion-dollar merger with a global communications leader.

For our client, the private equity investor, the transaction delivered outstanding returns. The firm secured significant cash proceeds at the initial sale while also retaining an equity stake in the buyer. This structure resulted in an estimated 5–6x return on invested capital within 12 months, with further upside realized when the acquiring company itself was sold in a later consolidation deal. The case has since been cited in the private equity and venture capital industry as a textbook example of rapid turnaround and value creation in the telecommunications infrastructure market.
