Executive Summary
A leading European family-owned industrial machinery manufacturer sought to strengthen its U.S. subsidiary after the departure of a long-serving CEO. While the subsidiary was profitable, growth lagged behind expectations. TH Bender was retained to identify a leader with deep industry expertise and the ability to drive sales, streamline operations, and thrive in an entrepreneurial environment. Within weeks, TH Bender delivered a highly experienced candidate who had risen from engineer to general manager at a mid-sized American machinery company, scaling revenues more than tenfold.
The Client
Founded in Germany, this family-owned company has grown from a small workshop into a global leader in sawing technology and fabrication systems. With full vertical integration, it designs and manufactures bandsaws, circular saws, and steel plate/profile machinery, supported by its own iron foundry. Today, the group employs more than 500 people worldwide, maintains subsidiaries in the United States, France, the UK, and China, and exports to over 70 countries.
The North American subsidiary, established in the late 1980s, employed around 20 people and serves customers in the metalworking, steel construction, and fabrication industries.
Challenge
The long-serving U.S. CEO announced his relocation out of state. While he had successfully improved the financial position of the subsidiary by reducing debt, his career background in a Fortune 100 U.S. corporation did not fully align with the entrepreneurial demands of managing the subsidiary of a German hidden champion. The shareholders decided to support his retirement and use the transition as an opportunity to optimize leadership.
From a market perspective, the subsidiary held only a single-digit share of the U.S. sawing equipment market, while shareholders believed that a low double-digit share was realistically attainable. The client sought a successor who combined deep industry expertise with hands-on leadership—an executive equally comfortable driving sales, managing operations, and running a lean, entrepreneurial organization.
Solution
TH Bender conducted a nationwide direct search across the American metalworking and fabrication equipment sector. Within weeks, seven finalists were identified and evaluated through multiple interview rounds.
The selected candidate brought more than 20 years of progressive leadership experience with a mid-sized, family-owned machinery company specializing in extrusion cutting, CNC machining, and fabrication systems. Starting as a programmer, he steadily expanded his responsibilities across engineering, operations, and sales. During the financial crisis, he assumed responsibility for nearly all critical functions—production, engineering, finance, and sales—when senior leadership roles were eliminated.
Under his leadership, the company grew from a struggling $2 million operation with tight cash flow into a thriving mid-market leader, reaching over $30 million in annual revenue and more than 100 employees. His track record demonstrated a rare combination of technical expertise, commercial acumen, and operational discipline, making him ideally suited to lead the client’s U.S. subsidiary
